Acebrophylline is a bronchodilator and mucoregulator. It is used primarily in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma, and other respiratory conditions characterized by excessive mucus production and airway inflammation.
It works by dilating the bronchioles (bronchodilation) and reducing mucus viscosity, making it easier for patients to breathe and clear their airways.
Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic agent that helps break down and thin out mucus, making it easier to clear from the airways. It is commonly used in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as COPD, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, and bronchitis.
Acetylcysteine works by breaking the disulfide bonds within the mucus molecules, which reduces its viscosity and makes it easier to expectorate.
Besides its mucolytic properties, acetylcysteine also serves as an antidote for acetaminophen (paracetamol) overdose due to its ability to replenish depleted glutathione levels in the liver.
