IVADINE is a unique heart medication primarily used for the treatment of certain types of chronic heart failure and angina pectoris (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle) in patients who cannot take beta-blockers or in combination with beta-blockers if the patient's condition is not adequately controlled. IVADINE works by reducing the heart rate in a novel way, distinct from the mechanism of action of beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers.
Mechanism of Action
IVADINE selectively inhibits the If (funny current) channel in the sinoatrial node, which is the heart's natural pacemaker. By inhibiting this current, IVADINE leads to a reduction in heart rate without affecting blood pressure or myocardial contractility. This reduction in heart rate decreases myocardial oxygen demand, particularly beneficial in angina, and improves cardiac efficiency in heart failure patients, potentially slowing the progression of the disease.
Uses
Chronic Heart Failure: IVADINE is indicated for certain patients with symptomatic systolic heart failure to reduce the risk of hospitalization and to slow down the progression of the disease.
Stable Angina: It is used in the management of stable angina pectoris for patients who are intolerant to or have a contraindication for the use of beta-blockers. It can also be used in IVADINE in patients whose angina is not adequately controlled with a beta-blocker alone.
