BEMPIDOC is a medication used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, specifically for lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in individuals who have not been able to achieve desired cholesterol levels through diet and statin therapy alone, or for those who are statin-intolerant. It belongs to a class of drugs known as ATP citrate lyase inhibitors, which work by a different mechanism than statins to reduce cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
BEMPIDOC inhibits the enzyme ATP citrate lyase, which is involved in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway upstream of the enzyme targeted by statins, HMG-CoA reductase. By inhibiting this enzyme, bempedoic acid reduces the production of cholesterol in the liver, leading to decreased LDL-C levels in the blood.
Primary Use: To lower LDL-C as part of a treatment plan for adults with elevated LDL cholesterol levels, particularly when statins are not tolerated well or when additional LDL-C lowering is needed on top of statin therapy.
It is often prescribed in combination with dietary changes aimed at reducing cholesterol intake and increasing cardiovascular health.
Effective at lowering LDL cholesterol levels in individuals who are statin-intolerant or require additional lowering beyond what statins can provide.
