Description

DIGIOXIN 0.25 Digoxin 0.25 mg DIGIOXIN is a medication derived from the leaves of the digitalis plant, used primarily to treat heart conditions. It has been in use for many years and is classified as a cardiac glycoside. The primary uses of DIGIOXIN include the management of heart failure and the control of heart rate in patients with atrial fibrillation. Uses Heart Failure: DIGIOXIN is used in the treatment of mild to moderate heart failure. It can improve symptoms, enhance quality of life, and increase exercise tolerance by increasing the force of myocardial contractions, which improves heart efficiency. Atrial Fibrillation:DIGIOXIN is also used to control the heart rate in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, primarily when other medications are ineffective or contraindicated. Mechanism of Action DIGIOXIN works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium ATPase pump in cardiac cells. This inhibition increases the amount of calcium available within the cells that can be used during each heart contraction, thereby increasing the force of myocardial contractions (positive inotropic effect). It also exerts effects on the autonomic nervous system, increasing parasympathetic activity and reducing sympathetic activity, which can help to slow the heart rate in conditions like atrial fibrillation.
