NITROQUICK refers to a long-acting formulation of nitroglycerin, a medication primarily used for the prevention of angina pectoris in patients with coronary artery disease. NITROQUICK is a nitrate that works by relaxing blood vessels, which decreases the oxygen demand of the heart by reducing preload (the volume of blood in the heart before contraction) and, to a lesser extent, afterload (the resistance the heart must overcome to eject blood).
Mechanism of Action
NITROQUICK is converted to nitric oxide (NO) in the body, a potent vasodilator that relaxes smooth muscle cells in the vascular wall, leading to dilation of veins and, to a lesser degree, arteries. This vasodilation results in decreased venous return to the heart (preload) and reduced arterial resistance (afterload), which in turn lower myocardial oxygen demand and relieve symptoms of angina.
Indications
Prophylaxis of Angina Pectoris: NITROQUICK is used to prevent episodes of angina pectoris, rather than for the acute relief of angina attacks. It is suited for patients who have predictable patterns of angina or who require long-term nitrate therapy for the management of chronic stable angina.
