Sirolimus, also known as rapamycin, is an immunosuppressive medication used to prevent organ rejection in people who have received kidney transplants, liver transplants, or heart transplants. It is also prescribed to treat certain types of cancer and rare conditions such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and angiomyolipoma associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).
As an immunosuppressant, sirolimus works by inhibiting the activity of a protein called mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin). mTOR plays a crucial role in regulating cell growth, proliferation, and immune responses. By inhibiting mTOR, sirolimus suppresses the activity of certain immune cells involved in the rejection of transplanted organs and the growth of certain tumors.
