TELMISTRUM 40 Telmisartan (40mg) TELMISTRUM is an antihypertensive medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It is primarily used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), but it can also be prescribed for the reduction of cardiovascular risk in patients unable to take angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Mechanism of Action TELMISTRUM works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors found in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Unlike ACE inhibitors, ARBs do not inhibit the breakdown of bradykinin and are therefore less likely to be associated with cough as a side effect. By blocking the effects of angiotensin II, telmisartan leads to vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and reduces the secretion of aldosterone, a hormone that causes the kidneys to retain sodium and water. These actions collectively result in lower blood pressure. Indications Hypertension: TELMISTRUM is used to treat high blood pressure, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: It may be prescribed for patients at high risk of cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks or strokes) who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors.
