DABIGATREX is an oral anticoagulant medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as direct thrombin inhibitors. It is a prodrug, which means it is converted in the body to its active form, dabigatran. DABIGATREX is primarily used to prevent and treat blood clots, reducing the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and prevent these conditions in patients who have previously been treated.
Uses
DABIGATREX is used for various indications, including:
Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
Treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and the prevention of recurrence of these conditions.
Prevention of DVT and PE in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery.
Mechanism of Action
DABIGATREX directly inhibits thrombin, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade that facilitates the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, a major component of blood clots. By inhibiting thrombin, dabigatran prevents the formation of blood clots, thereby reducing the risk of stroke, DVT, and PE.
